I think of a lot folks see BitTorrent as the original social TV company because it formed affinity groups around videos that members of a group want access to. The sharing of bits between that group made the video more available, and that’s a very fundamental Social TV application.

When TV creates shows that are iconic, and these shows are properly deployed, through technology that allows them to be watched whenever and wherever they want, TV gains the power to work with the web rather than against it.

Broadcasting is dead. There is only Me-to-Youcasting. We are the ‘Me’, and we see the ‘You’ as being hundreds of millions of socially engaged viewers on a multiplicity of devices.

“What has changed is Twitter has brought people closer, and made that a more rich, deep and close experience… a global watercooler. There has never been a more exciting time in TV than now.”

“76% of TV viewers that are surveyed say they were prompted to start watching a TV show by positive comments, and 64% said it was due to social media buzz about show topics or storylines.”

Cast a shadow with ‘Game of Thrones’ fan art

There’s something about hardcore fandom that requires the most dedicated of followers to create interpretations, renderings and other miscellany to show other fans and people involved with the show/movie/meme. Why do people paint a picture of a photo? Why do they photoshop a pair of characters together in a love montage? Why do people create gifs? The answer doesn’t matter, but it doesn’t keep people from doing it anyways.

So while “Game of Thones” has been the subject of many a meme (Stupid Ned Stark is the best) on tumblr, it appears that the show has realized they need to reach out to the tumblr community (because the audience is there), and has given them some unique content.

“Game of Thrones” has finally made an official tumblr account, “Cast a Large Shadow,” and they’re using it as the place where fan art comes to be loved and adored. From the tumblr so far, they are asking for Halloween costumes (Daenerys in particular), oil paintings, music, etc. As you can see, they have a nice big submit buttton, a “fan identification” bar, and a very on-world call for questions (“Send a Raven.”)

This is a really, really great use of a dramatic series and social media, choosing a good niche for an outlet, and letting fans be a part of it.

Never.no partners with Vizrt

Already a strong player in the “Second Screen” realm, Never.no has set up a partnership with Vizrt in order to ensure that their graphic elements mesh with existing TV design and experiences.

Lost Remote notes that Freemantle Interactive VP Olivier Delfosse said at SXSW that some producers are hesitant to work with Social TV applications, worried that they won’t fit in with their shows and not mesh with their current storytelling.

This development speaks to a very valid concern, as when it comes to outside development, it can be difficult for broadcasters to have their standards line up with new applications, and unless they are developed in-house, there can be difficulty in getting them paired correctly.

It also speaks to the typical corporate structure of most companies — including broadcasters, where departments and resources are silo’d, and TV production design only living within TV production design silos. As with any medium, design development has different needs for each platform, and for “Social TV,” there doesn’t yet appear to be a standard of some kind. This partnership between Never.no and Vizrt could be a big step forward to coming to some kind of census of what second screen experiences could look like, so it’s worth keeping an eye on them and what they produce in the future.
